HIC Underwriting Managers recently hosted the Cape Town leg of its broker roadshow at D’Aria Estate, bringing together brokers, partners and the HIC team for a morning focused on market realities, product development and practical collaboration. The event created space not only for product updates, but also for meaningful engagement between HIC and its broker network.

A clear theme emerged throughout the morning: Relationships remain central to HIC’s value proposition. In a market shaped by tighter reinsurance conditions and changing risk dynamics, the HIC team emphasised the importance of disciplined underwriting, problem-solving, and ongoing communication with brokers. The roadshow served as a platform to gather feedback, deepen relationships, and reaffirm HIC’s commitment to supporting brokers in an increasingly complex operating environment.

That message was reinforced by HIC’s longstanding position in the market. With a 28-year history and roots in hospitality underwriting, HIC has evolved its offering over time while maintaining its core focus. The team also highlighted its position as an independent specialist UMA in hospitality, noting that this independence allows it to preserve the personal touch that has defined its broker relationships over the years.

The roadshow gave brokers a first look at several product developments. These included a new padel court offering covering key risk areas such as glass and turf, an SME solution tailored for smaller businesses, and enhancements to restaurant cover that now include items such as power surge as standard. Together, these updates reflected HIC’s intent to remain relevant, responsive, and closely aligned with broker feedback.

In a complex market, it is strong partnerships and practical solutions that ultimately define value for brokers and their clients.

HIC’s partners added further depth to the session by showcasing specialist solutions designed to improve service delivery and reduce friction in the claims environment. 0861 Waterlite spoke about its expertise-driven geyser claims model and proactive inspection approach, while My Glass highlighted its national service footprint, mobile convenience offering and strong customer satisfaction focus. Phishield introduced Cyber Funds Protect, a value-added solution created with HIC to address growing exposure to scams, phishing, and fraudulent fund transfers.

Supplier contributions also brought useful operational insight to the table. Beame/Matrix shared how the tracking environment has shifted in recent years, with insurers placing far greater emphasis on proven recovery performance, particularly on high-risk vehicles. Their presentation underscored the value of solutions that are difficult to jam, easy to conceal and simple to install, helping brokers and insurers focus on real recovery outcomes rather than product noise. Garagesure, meanwhile, outlined its specialist offering for fuel retailers and motor traders, including fuel guarantees, a 24- hour helpline for incorrect dispensing of fuel incidents, third-party car hire following incorrect fuel dispensing, cover related to underground tanks, theft by trickery extensions, environmental rehabilitation support and broader motor traders wording.

Overall, the roadshow struck the right balance between relationship-building and practical substance. More than a showcase of products, it was a reminder that brokers continue to value accessibility, responsiveness and specialist thinking, especially in a market that demands both agility and depth.

If the Cape Town leg is anything to go by, HIC’s focus for the year ahead is clear: strengthen partnerships, listen closely and keep evolving in step with broker and client needs.
