At just 28-years-old, Cherine Lombard has faced challenges most people her age could never imagine. In 2023, while renewing her driver’s licence, she noticed vision problems. Further tests revealed a melanoma in her right eye: a diagnosis that came as a huge shock to her and her family.
“It's not something a 27-year-old thinks will ever happen, or imagines as a reality,” Cherine recalls.
Living with a critical illness diagnosis
Cherine’s treatment began with once-off radiation at the end of 2023, followed by ongoing injections into the melanoma in her right eye every six weeks. These traumatic treatments required time away from the classroom, where she worked as a science teacher, and often left her unable to work for days at a time.
Fortunately, Cherine worked closely with her brother, who is also her financial adviser, from an early age to ensure she had the right cover in place. She was able to claim on her Critical Illness Income (CII) and Critical Illness Lump Sum (CILS) benefits from Bidvest Life. This meant she received 130% of her insured monthly income for 12 months (less the waiting period) irrespective of her ability to work, along with a once-off lump sum to cover additional costs. Together, these benefits provided the financial stability she needed to focus on her health.
This highlights a gap often overlooked during a Financial Needs Analysis (FNA). Traditional critical illness lump sum benefits are often unable to address the ongoing monthly expenses a client will have while living with a critical illness.
Meanwhile, relying solely on traditional income protection can also have limitations. It typically pays 100% of the insured’s income and usually stops once they’re deemed fit to resume work, even if they still face major treatment and recovery expenses.
CII bridges this gap by paying out upon diagnosis of a defined illness, regardless of whether the client can still work. In Cherine’s case, this enhanced support made a significant difference. After her CII claim was paid for the first 12 months of her 24-month Temporary Income Protector (TIP) term, the claim was further extended under the permanent impairment criteria for the remainder of the TIP term until May 2026.
A life-changing turning point
In early 2025, during a routine treatment visit, Cherine received further devastating news: she had permanently lost all functional vision in her right eye due to the severity of the melanoma and the ongoing treatment. To prevent the cancer from spreading, her specialist recommended removing the eye, placing an orbital implant, and fitting a prosthetic replacement.
“When my doctor first told me that removal was the best option, it was incredibly difficult to process. My biggest concern was the effect it would have on my family and friends. But as a family, we decided it was the right decision. They all still see the same Cherine, and that’s made the healing journey easier,” she says.
This marked a major transition for Cherine. She relocated from Benoni to Klerksdorp to be closer to her family, and began working at her brother’s financial advisory business. Her father, also in the industry, had always taught her the importance of having the right cover in place – lessons that proved invaluable.
When her eye was removed, Cherine was able to claim again under her TIP and Extended Income Protection (EIP) benefits. Because she’d selected Whole of Life (WOL), she’ll receive 25% of her cover amount under the permanent impairment criteria for visual impairment, for the rest of her life.
“Claiming from Bidvest Life was extremely straightforward. My claim was paid within 48 hours, which was incredibly helpful during a very difficult time. Knowing that I’ll receive an income for the rest of my life has taken a huge weight off my shoulders,” she says.
Looking ahead with confidence
Since joining her brother’s business, Cherine has discovered a passion for the financial services industry and plans to study actuarial science in Potchefstroom next year; a new challenge she’s ready to face. She shares her story to help others understand the importance of taking out cover early.
“Many young people don’t see the value of taking out life insurance, but you never know what tomorrow holds. Life throws curveballs, and you need to be prepared. Having the right cover changed my whole perspective. It gave me financial support after my diagnosis, as well as the freedom to make big decisions about my future.”
Cherine’s experience highlights how the right mix of benefits can work together to protect clients through every stage of a health crisis, from initial treatment to permanent impairment. For Cherine, this didn’t just cover her financial needs or ensure that she wasn’t a burden on her family. It gave her the opportunity to rebuild her life, follow her dreams, and move forward with confidence.
