Anthony is CEO and co founder of Simply, an insurtech startup aiming to disrupt the life insurance space in SA and beyond.
SImply uses technology, data and behavioural science to radically reduce the cost and complexity of life insurance. Anthony was previously CEO of Lightstone, a company he co founded in 2006. Lightstone comprises data platforms, transaction platforms and enabling services. Initially focused on mortgage risk management, the company is now a diversified across the automotive, property, financial services and telecoms sectors.
Before co founding Lightstone, Anthony spent 6 years with McKinsey and Company as a strategy consultant and, before that, 3 years as a mechanical engineer with African Explosives and Chemical Industries (AECI).
Anthony has an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management and a Mechanical Engineering degree from the University of Cape Town. He was selected to the World Economic Forum’s ‘Forum of Young Global Leaders’ in 2009. Anthony has a very supportive wife, Lara, and three wonderful daughters Jessica, Samantha and Lucy. He tries to spend as much time with all of them as possible. He is a keen out doorsman and sportsman with interests ranging from running and mountain biking to fishing and golf.

Although he is an engineer by training, he spent most of his career in corporate and investment banking covering the insurance sector and other non-bank financial institutions. CEO | Inclusivity Solutions

Jeremy is CEO of Inclusivity Solutions, digital insurance technical service provider. Jeremy is recognisedas a global expert in microinsurance and digital insurance and has been involved in advising, researching and implementing many initiatives across the world. He has been a Director at BFA, a consultancy focused on innovation in responsible financial services, advising and supporting a number of global insurers and mobile operators. Previously he was Divisional Director and Head of Microinsurance at the Hollard Insurance Group driving a number of their low income insurance innovations internationally from product development to distribution to consumer engagement. He led Hollard’s work on m-insurance including establishing a partnership and pilot with MTN and advised the group on initiatives in Pakistan, China and other countries. Prior to Hollard, Jeremy was Executive Director at FinMark Trust where he was responsible for insurance and mobile money, both of which have had global impact.

Jeremy is a Chartered Certified Accountant (UK) and holds an MSc in International Development (Bath, UK). He is a founding member and adviser to Cenfri, and a member of the IAIS-Micro Insurance Network Joint Working Group on Micro-insurance. He also chaired the SA Insurance Association committee on financial education and has served on the South African Short Term Insurance Advisory Committee at the behest of the Minister of Finance, as well as sat on the board of MicroEnsure, a specialist microinsurance intermediary that focuses on mobile insurance. He speaks regularly at international conferences on microinsurance, m-insurance, mobile money and innovation in financial services.

Manager | SkiHost Genasys Technologies
Ronald Jackson has been with Genasys Technologies for almost 15 years. After completing his B.sc (Information Technology) degree he started as a developer with a software development company for the insurance industry and joined Genasys not long afterwards. He has played various roles within Genasys during the course of his career, both on the technical and client facing side. Currently Ronald is heading up SKiHost, which is the fully managed, cloud based Genas ys solution focused on the small to medium brokers in the South African market.
Director | Norton Rose Fulbright

Caroline is a litigation and dispute resolution lawyer based in Johannesburg. She specialises in insurance law and financial lines. She focuses on a number of areas including directors and officers, bankers blanket bond, professional indemnity, construction and engineering, general and product liability, and cyber.

Caroline has represented clients in the local and international insurance markets. She has published a number of articles on topics within her field of interest. Caroline holds a BComm and LLB from the University of the Witwatersrand and an LLM in Insurance law from UNISA. She was admitted as an attorney of the High Court of South Africa in 1999.

Caroline commenced her career at a niche insurance litigation practice. She spent a short time in the insurance sector and thereafter joined a leading law firm as a senior associate and was promoted to partner in 2011. Caroline joined us as a director in 2015.

She is a member of the Law Society of the Northern Province and is a committee member of the Maritime Law Association of South Africa.


Executive & Co-Founder | Fo-Sho Insurance
Before starting Fo-sho, Avi spent the past 20 years in various operational and strategic corporate roles culminating in an executive director role at a public company in South Africa. Avihas extensive international experience having worked throughout Africa, the UK, Australia and New Zealand. He’s experience is in risk management, private equity, corporate and investment finance, and strategy.
The reality of technological disruption means that if you don’t have skin in the game, you will be obsolete no matter where you find yourself.
Technology is changing the dynamics of all industries. Anyone with a smart phone and a data connection, is a customer, a service provider or a competitor. Your brand, your offices and even your balance sheet may not protect you from this wave of change.
The pace and depth at which start-ups are innovating around the world is unprecedented, the insurance industry, even with its moats, will not be left unscathed.
Switchboard operators, typists, word processers, mail sorters are amongst the careers that have all but disappeared, soon it may be the turn of the accountant, the lawyer and the doctor.
Insurance started as a social good, communities taking care of each other during tough times. As communities (books) became bigger and the social connections between policyholder and insurers were lost, the objectives of a social good, has given way to a profit motive.
The drive for profit (bonuses) on one side, with the perceived lack of value on the other, has resulted in this conflicting relationship between insured and insurer, often with the customer getting the short end of the stick.
Now, customers are demanding choice and better value for money. Insurtech companies are changing the rules, relying on
transparent systems, rich data is changing the manner in which customers and insurers are engaging with each other.
Call centre agents give way to chatbots, brokers to algorithms and loss assessors to image recognition and machine learning.
In exchange for their data, customers want tailored solutions and pricing.
At FoSho we believe that the customer is the centre of our business model of creating a better insurance product and experience.
A system were the insured and the insurer are partners, each with skin in the game. To enable us to partner with our customers, we have used game theory and behavioural economics in product design, and algorithms, artificial intelligence and data to change the distribution model, risk assessments and improving pricing and assessments.
We are using technology to make buying insurance easy, convenient and affordable by reducing customer acquisition costs and instances of fraud.
A better experience for everyone. This, we believe, is the next evolution of the insurance product. At Fosho, we are pioneering social underwriting, the first of its kind within insurance, allowing individuals to insure together, allowing everyone in the group

Managing Director | Lireas

Valerie started working for the Hannover Re Group 25 short years ago in the technical accounting department. Having spent 4 years heading up the Company’s Internal Audit Department, Valerie joined Lireas in 1999 and has been theManaging Director for 16 years.

Lireas is the investment Holding Company for the Hannover Re Africa Group and has been investing in UMAs for the past 30 years. More recently Lireas was given a mandate to invest in insurtech businesses and currently has made 4 insurtech investments with others in the pipeline.

Valerie says of her position as Lireas MD:

“There aren’t too many people who can say that they love what they do -I am one of those fortunate individuals! Managing and working with entrepreneurs forover 16years has been both stimulating and challenging. Daniel is the founder and guiding force behind Click2Sure. Daniel is a successful serial e-commerce entrepreneur who spotted an opportunity in the annexure insurance sector while building Groupon South Africa (a business he co-founded in 2010 and successfully exited in 2015).

Daniel has been instrumental in growing the e-commerce industry in South Africa and developed Groupon into one of Africa’s leading e-commerce companies. He has won numerous awards, including the U-startAfrica top e-commerce website award 2011, 2012, and in 2015 as the person who has had the biggest impact on E-commerce in Africa. He holds an MBA from London Business School and has completed a variety of professional courses including, more recently, theSingularity University Executive Management program.

Business Development Manager Africa | ClaimVantage

With over 30 years experience in Financial Services, John is Business Development Manager Africa since 2014 for ClaimVantage, the leading international provider of automated Life, Health and Absence claim management software. He is based in Johannesburg.

Prior to ClaimVantage, John worked as a management consultant, helping high potential Irish software start-ups to enter and do business in South Africa, mainly in the Financial Services sector.

Between 1996 and 2011 John was aFinance and Operations Executive for Africa’s largest bank, Standard Bank, which included Financial Director responsibility for Group IT.

Previous career experience included four years as a Financial Director and Risk Manager in a global timber business, three years in a management consultancy, two years in an entrepreneurial financial services company and eight years with Arthur Andersen in South Africa andIreland.

John is a Chartered Accountant, qualified both in Ireland and South Africa, an Economics and SocialSciences graduate of Trinity College Dublin and has a Diploma in Management from Henley Management College, London.

John is a member of the SA Institute of Directors.

John and his wife Veronica have a son Shane and a daughter Orla. When not working, Johnen joys playing golf and doing community service work.

Executive Head, Business Architecture & Digital solutions | Discovery Insure

Vicky is the Executive Head at Discovery Insure responsible for Business Architecture and Digital Solutions. She has been with Discovery for 15 years and hold a BSC Honours degree in Computer Science from the University of Pretoria. She started out her career on the development side of solutions but she quickly realised that while technology can normally do anything asked of it – the questions being asked were centered around the technology and not the business. This caused a great shift in her thinking and she started gravitating towards the requirements for solutions and working on making them more applicable to the requirement and not a pre-determined platform or technology. Vicky believes that all solutions with automation are digitizing, but the drive to self-service has been a great challenge and requires understanding the client, not only the needs of your own business. She has consistently applied this philosophy in the projects that she has been involved in at Discovery and that have gone on to disrupt the market with innovation and client centricity at the heart of what she and her team have delivered

Donald Dinnie, CEO | Chalcid & IcePack 

Donald joined Natmed as CEO and the Natmed Group as Group CEO from April 2018. Donald has a long association with Natmed as its lead external legal counsel.

He joins Natmed from leading global legal firm Norton Rose Fulbright South Africa where he was CEO, and previously Head of their Disputes Practice.Chambers Global 2018 list Donald as the sole Eminent Practitioner for South Africa disputes and comments in respect of Notable Practitioners that: ” Donald Dinnie maintains an impressive reputation in this sector for his depth of experience in a range of contentious disputes. Robert Bennetto, CTO | Chalcid & IcePack

Robert is passionate about computational complexity, optimisation and R as a tool for visualisation and data wrangling. Robert has headed up top analytics companies in South Africa with domain experience with some of the largest transport providers and in South Africa, assisting them with their optimisation strategies and guiding the development of optimisation tools to handle the specific requirements of the market. Robert is now leading the technology arm for an offshore-based start-up (ICEPACK) providing AI centric optimisation services to a global market.

Robert holds a basket of degrees including BSc. Statistics and Actuarial Science, BSc Hons. Mathematical Statistics, with Merit, MSc. Operations Research and a PhD Ind.Eng.

Executive Head: Risk and Projects | Brolink

Hendrik Heyns, Executive Head: Risk and Projects at Brolink, is highly motivated, passionate and inspires those around him. He enjoys strategy, pioneering and unstructured problem solving.

He has worked in the short term insurance industry for over fifteen years and has gained invaluable experience, drawing on and learning from those around him. He reached a high maturity level much earlier on in life by overcoming obstacles and dealing with the emotions attached to such obstacles.

Passionate about the insurance industry and the people in it, Heyns thrives on expounding the value of insurance to those with whom he comes into contact. Heyns also knows the value of collaboration within and across industries. He participates at board level of the South African Credit & Risk Reporting Association (SACRRA) and is currently a director of the Insurance Systems Providers Forum (iSPF).

Topic: Evolution requires agility

If one were to consider comparing players in the insurance industry to boxers, a traditional player would be considered the champion boxer edging closer to retirement and the insure-tech player would be the youthful challenger to the title. The challenger has speed, enthusiasm, bravado and energy on their side. The champion has experience, determination, muscle memory and a culture of winning. Should they battle it out, it will be glorious to watch and hard to determine who will win. Now consider if they were to partner in training.Both would benefit immensely from the partnership if they were open to learning from each other. The key for the experienced boxer though is to become agile in order to keep the pace and my discussion will focus on agility.

Sumarie Greybe

After 6 years of non-life underwriting at Swiss Re, Sumarie spent 15 years as actuarial advisor to most of SA’s large insurers, as head of Quindiem Consulting &then EY’s short-term insurance consulting practices. She was the Statutory Actuary (and on the Advisory committees) of 2 of the largest short-term insurance groups in SA. Pioneered the use of Dynamic Financial Analysis (DFA) in SA’s short-term insurance market, predominantly for the application of reinsurance optimisation and capital management.

 

Ernest North

Co-Founder | Naked Insurance

A qualified short-term insurance actuary, previously head of pricing niche business at Hannover Re Africa, then consulting (mostly on insurance strategy and capital management) to various insurers across Southern and East Africa for 5 years, before leading product development as the Underwriting and Actuarial Director at a local insurance group.Co-founded Naked (development kicking off in October 2016) which launches in April 2018.
