Ian was born in Dublin and moved to South Africa in 1981. He qualified as a Chartered Accountant (CA) in 1980 and CA (SA) in 1983.

He was appointed to the PriceWaterhouse partnership in 1986 Early in 1996 Ian was approached to join AGA Holdings as Managing Director, a relatively small JSE listed life insurance player with Investec as its significant shareholder. AGA Holdings later restructured as Capital Alliance Holdings Limited, one of the first broad-based black empowerment financial services companies in South Africa. In December 2004, Capital Alliance Holdings was sold to Liberty Group and Ian was appointed Deputy CEO of Liberty Group in March 2005.

In May 2006 Ian joined the Sanlam Group as Chief Executive: Strategy and Projects, where his responsibilities were to undertake a strategic review of the group.

In June 2007, he was appointed Chief Executive of Santam whose market capitalisation has more than doubled since his appointment.
He was appointed Deputy CEO of the Sanlam Group in January 2015 and from 1 July 2015 he took over as CEO of Sanlam.

Ian is a keen sportsman who played provincial cricket and rugby in Ireland. In South Africa, he played cricket and rugby for the Wanderers Club up until 1991. Golf is currently his game and he is also a keen cyclist. He is married and has four children.

Greg has lived and worked in N America, Europe and Africa, with employment taking him far afield. He has presented or worked in insurance in 25 countries: Canada, China, Ethiopia, France, Germany, Ghana, Hungary, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, the Netherlands, Poland, South Africa, South Korea, Switzerland, Taiwan, Togo, Uganda, the UK and the US. He has been published in English in two books, and industry publications in Ghana, South Africa, the UK and the US, and he has been translated and published in Italian, Japanese and Mandarin.

Greg’s focus is on innovation and the cost-effective application of technology, and currently he looks business development for MunichRe’s clients in Africa (excl-SA).

He has an interest in anything to do with social upliftment and beneficial financial inclusion. On weekends, you may find him at the beach, in the mountains or training for a triathlon.

Senior L&H Client Manager Africa

Bode Olajumoke joined Swiss Re in 2016. A Fellow of the Society of Actuaries in the United States, he holds a B.Sc. in Actuarial Science as well as an M.B.A degree in International Finance. Bode has been exposed to numerous issues facing Healthcare stakeholders and he has liaised with clients to ensure adequate design, pricing and projections, and strategic positioning. Prior to joining Swiss Re, Bode has been engaged on various project in USA, UK and sub-Saharan countries to assist stakeholders in managing their funds, determine the adequacy of the health premium payments from the National Health Insurance Schemes, capital adequacy analysis, wellness impact analysis, asset liability modelling, valuations as well as designing community health plans. He is married with a wife and son and is an avid Rugby fan.

Brooks Mparutsa is the Chief Executive of Hollard International. He was previously the Chief Financial Officer at Hollard from 2007 to 2015.

Brooks is responsible for Hollards’ operations outside South Africa both in the Rest of Africa and Asia. Outside South Africa, Hollard has a presence in 6 markets in Africa and 4 in Asia. He holds Bachelors and Honours degrees in Accounting from UNISA and is a qualified Chartered Accountant.

Brooks has 3 children and is passionate about family, travel, rugby and music.

Andries Mahlase has the following educational qualifications, B. Agric Admin from the University of the North ( Now Limpopo), Management Development Programme (MDP) –University of South Africa(UNISA), Masters in Business Leadership (MBL) – UNISA, Certificate in Participatory Development –UNISA and is an Associate of the South African Insurance Institute.

Andries has 29 years, experience in the agricultural sector that included a stint in Agricultural Development Finance, agricultural semi-government organizations, NGOS and Reinsurance. He joined Munich Reinsurance Company of Africa in 2002 as an Agricultural Specialist Underwriter. Andries, leads the Agriculture, Special Risks and Facultative Division at MRoA, for all business in Sub Saharan Africa.

Thokozile Mahlangu is the Chief Executive Officer (designate) of the Insurance Institute of SA, a professional body responsible for the development of insurance skills. She has over 18 years experience within the short term insurance market and has a proven track record of successfully developing strategies that grow a business and elevate the brand and product awareness to all stakeholders. One of her key strengths is in developing and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders, strategic marketing, effective communication, and general business analysis. Her strengths are further reflected in her transformational leadership. Thokozile has excellent networking skills and commands the respect of colleagues within and outside the insurance industry, she is passionate about empowering people and is committed to knowledge sharing.

Thokozile has been an Executive Manager at Sasria SOC for ten years and has and has worked with the Board of Directors during this period. She is a member of the Fire Protection Association Board of Directors and is the Audit, Risk, and Compliance Board Committee Chairperson at the Fire and Protection Association. She previously served as the Head of Education portfolio at the Insurance Institute of Gauteng, then was nominated as Vice-President in 2016 and in 2017 she was nominated as the Deputy President.

Dr Ben Kajwang is the Director for Programmes for Africa under the Association of Insurance Trainers Educators in Africa having been recently elected in Cairo, during the African Insurance Organization –AIO General Assembly. He has been a Corporate Manager, Consultant, Lecturer, Facilitator and Trainer. He has been a consultant for the Inter University Council of East Africa, a Post Graduate Lecturer at Uganda Management Institute (UMI).

He is currently the Coordinator for the coordinator for the Regional Certification in Agricultural Insurance. He is currently the Coordinator capacity building for the World Bank Index-Based Weather Risk Management Programs for Eastern and Southern Africa a program funded by European Union’s All ACP Agricultural Commodities Programme (AAACP).

He is also the lead Coordinator for the COMESA USAID/COMPETE sponsored Regional Agricultural Insurance Certification program. He has undertaken training on weather index, price volatility and commodity derivatives with a view of leading capacity building in the region for these programs.

He is a member of FARMD – the Global Forum for Agricultural Risk Management in Development (an arm of the World Bank). He has attended several high profile seminars/ workshops including on Beyond the Balance Score Card, Corporate Governance and Risk Management. A number of manuscripts on insurance and risk management have been credited to him.

Craig Olivier has been at the heart of Genasys for over 16 years. He was part of the original team that started the development of SKi®.

Having always had a passion for IT and building systems, he studied Software Development after school. Joining Genasys straight out of college Craig quickly climbed the ladder to become the youngest Director in the company.

He has 15 years extensive experience in the South African, UK and African Short Term Insurance compliance requirements. He involved and focused on the management of System implementations and design, data conversions, reporting, core development and building business solutions within the SKi® platform. His focus now is more on the technical governance of Genasys together with looking after new sales from an executive perspective.

Business Development Director; Thomas Kieck, is one of the founding members of Tial Technologies, he has a technical background with formal programming and IT qualifications to match. From having worked in insurance all his professional life, he saw a gap in the market and aspired to become an industry leader. Accompanied by his entrepreneurial spirit, intimate knowledge of all aspects of insurance and passion for IT solutions to business problems, Thomas started his own company which evolved into Tial Technologies in 1999. Thomas constantly looks for IT innovations to increase all of Tial’s partners efficiency within the insurance industry to improve customer and broker experience.

With over 30 years experience in Financial Services, John is Business Development Manager Africa since 2014 for ClaimVantage, the leading international provider of automated Life, Health and Absence claim management software. He is based in Johannesburg.

Prior to ClaimVantage, John worked as a management consultant, helping high potential Irish software start-ups to enter and do business in South Africa, mainly in the Financial Services sector.

Between 1996 and 2011 John was a Finance and Operations Executive for Africa’s largest bank, Standard Bank, which included Financial Director responsibility for Group IT.

Previous career experience included four years as a Financial Director and Risk Manager in a global timber business, three years in a management consultancy, two years in an entrepreneurial financial services company and eight years with Arthur Andersen in South Africa and Ireland.

John is a Chartered Accountant, qualified both in Ireland and South Africa, an Economics and Social Sciences graduate of Trinity College Dublin and has a Diploma in Management from Henley Management College, London.

Antoine Paillusseau is the CEO and Co-Founder of Finchatbot, a technology solution that enables financial clients to connect with and add immediate value to its’ customers. He is a seasoned entrepreneur with experience in Business Strategy, Sales Management and Venture building across both Africa and Europe.

Whilst he is passionate about creating innovative solutions and is constantly conceptualizing new ways to improve on his suite of products, he is also committed to enabling entrepreneurial talent in Africa. He does this by sharing his lessons and knowledge as a businessman and fosters growth through an Incubator called Far Ventures which he co-founded with business partner Romain Diaz in 2016.

Prior to starting both Far Ventures and Finchatbot he also Co-Founded TimeOne South Africa; an award winning online marketing agency based in Cape Town.

Antoine holds a Master’s Degree in Entrepreurship from EDC Paris, France. He believes in working hard, being passionate about what you do for a living – and having fun doing it!

Dr Martyn Davies is the Managing Director of Emerging Markets & Africa at Deloitte. He also leads the Africa firm’s China and Japan Services Group and is a member of the Global Firm’s Insight Advisory Group. Over his career, he has been an advisor to a large array of multinational firms on their market entry & engagement strategies in Africa. He has also conducted a large amount of advisory work on behalf of the public sector.

He has advised companies that include AECI, African Development Bank, AfriEximbank, Aveng, Barclays, Barloworld, Discovery, Johnson & Johnson, Liberty Life, MasterCard, Old Mutual, Standard Bank and Unilever and in the public sector has advised governments including those of Botswana, Ghana, Korea, the Netherlands, Norway, South Africa and the United Kingdom.

Martyn has previously been ranked the # 1 analyst in South Africa in the “Other African Economies & Markets” category as awarded by the Financial Mail in its Annual Analysts of the Year awards.

He is a Senior Fellow at the MasterCard Center for Inclusive Growth – a group comprising leading international economists which works on subjects relating to macro-economy and inclusive growth. He is a member of the Korea-Africa Forum of the National Assembly (Parliament) of the Republic of Korea.

Martyn was selected in 2010 as a Young Global Leader, an honour bestowed by the World Economic Forum each year to recognise the most distinguished young leaders nominated below the age of 40 from around the world and has served in various advisory capacities at the WEF. He has been a member of the WEF’s Global Agenda Council on China, the world’s foremost intellectual network that helps inform the Forum’s Annual Meeting in Davos.

Martyn completed his PhD at the University of the Witwatersrand at the age of 25, has studied at Yonsei University (Seoul) and has completed executive programs at Harvard Business School, Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, the Jackson Institute for International Affairs at Yale University and Said Business School at Oxford University.

He has previously been on the faculty at Stellenbosch University and the University of Pretoria, as well as at the business schools of both universities. Martyn has delivered lectures by invitation at Harvard University, MIT, London School of Economics, Oxford University, IE Business School, Peking University, the African Development Bank, the OECD, the European Commission, the Royal African Society, and the World Bank. He is a Visiting Professor at IE Business School, Madrid, Spain.

He is married to Suheima and is the proud Dad of Mikha, Zarah and Adam.

David Laxton is a Senior Director at S&P Global Ratings and a Sector Lead currently responsible for the insurance markets in the Middle East and Africa. He is also chairs the rating committees for Global Multiline Insurers and Global Reinsurers. He joined S&P Global Ratings in December 1995 having previously held senior financial positions in both life and non-life insurance companies in London and been an insurance regulator. He is a Chartered Accountant with an MBA from City University.David has been with S&P Global Ratings for over 20 years and has covered a broad range of non-life, life and reinsurance companies across both developed and developing markets across EMEA. David has been involved in developing S&P Global Ratings criteria for insurance company analysis and is global head of Insurance Industry and Country Risk Analysis.Before joining S&P Global Ratings David worked in insurance for 14 years, most of that time in the London Market, and then spent 3 years as an insurance regulator responsible for supervising the UK’s major life and non-life insurance companies.
