Santam wins insurer of the year award for the second year running

By: Santam

Santam – South Africa’s largest general insurer – has won the SAMBRA Insurer of the Year Award for the second consecutive year. The prestigious SA Motor Body Repairer’s Association (SAMBRA) award recognises insurers and suppliers for their contribution to the sustainability of motor body repairs across the country.

The award ceremony took place on 18 October at Emperors Palace in Johannesburg. SAMBRA plays a pivotal role in advocating for sustainability in the industry, by setting a best-practice benchmark that goes beyond regulatory compliance. Results are derived from an annual, independently managed survey which asks SAMBRA members across the country to rate insurers, original equipment manufacturers, and paint and equipment suppliers against myriad criteria, including green practices.

Ebrahim Asmal, Executive Head: Group Sourcing and Transformation at Santam, says, “This award is recognition for the excellence shown by the many special people in our Santam Team. Good and Proper is what we are; we strive for excellence in everything we do. We are in the risk management business and we are committed to taking a leading role in advocating and promoting green practices in our processes and with our suppliers. This approach will help us thrive for another 100 years.”

Critically, SAMBRA empowers all participants to measure themselves and their service against top performers. Additionally, it’s a platform to foster ongoing collaboration between players. Going forward, partnerships will continue to be key, with SAMBRA National Director Richard Green calling for ‘greater levels of cooperation and coordination between all players’.

This collaboration is important to survive and thrive amidst the rapid technological and human-centric advancements of the digital age. With the industry evolving and artificial intelligence and machine learning set to play increasingly significant roles, a key concern is people, given the prospective impact on jobs. A big priority will be equipping individuals with the skills required to consistently remain relevant amidst competition with other people – and robots.

Add to that a global movement toward sustainability and there’s a lot for all businesses to prioritise. Asmal says that it comes down to choosing to do the right thing, “Doing the right thing means that at every level of an organisation, we need to hold each other accountable to the values and standards embedded in our culture. This is how we’ve always operated at Santam. We are committed to running our business with integrity. This requires us to keep asking the right questions, to consider the various scenarios that could arise, and to interrogate how we can continue to hold ourselves accountable at all times.”
