Pamodzi Group, through its digital technology business Pamodzi Smart, has launched South Africa’s first Pamodzi Smart store in Diepkloof, Soweto.

Pamodzi Smart is a trading platform and device that supports better stock management, cash management, calculations and reporting, as well as empowering smart entrepreneurs in emerging markets to offer a diversity of services traditionally only available from formal retailers. The Smart system is designed to professionalise informal traders and improve their financial management, providing a credit profile to support formal trading. With the Pamodzi Smart system in place, small store owners are able to offer customers the convenience of paying utility bills, buying bus tickets and other daily essentials without having to travel to a city shopping centre.

Led by Mr Ndaba Ntsele, Chairman of Pamodzi Group, one of the leading pioneers of black business in South Africa, Pamodzi Smart is expected to formalise township trading and ensure that it continues to empower black people. “We are excited to see this idea that has been long in the making coming to fruition, it gives us comfort and satisfaction as Pamodzi Group, when we use the power of business to liberate our people from poverty and depravation. This is the belief that has always informed our attitude and approach to how we conduct ourselves” said Mr Ntsele.

Executive Director of Pamodzi Smart, Mr Sihle Mkhize says the aim is to empower informal traders to grow and create value for their business. “With the new Pamodzi Smart store, the Pamodzi Group aims to help create wealth for informal traders and their communities, by using technology as a catalyst in the retail environment primarily to grow their businesses by participating in the FMCG and Food products value chain.” Added Mr Mkhize

President Cyril Ramaphosa, in his 10-year growth plan delivered at the State of Nation Address, named economic transformation and job creation as key growth areas. Pamodzi, being a pioneer in the industries it operates in, continues to be a contributor to the government’s mandate through initiatives such as this.

The MEC for Economic Development, Agriculture, Environment and Rural Development, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa who was also in attendance of the auspicious occasion, reiterated the mandate, naming the township revitalisation strategy as a focus area to resolve social conflict, inequality and poverty: “Our interventions must be deliberate and well considered, we need to affirm and revitalise existing businesses that have died as a result of the incursions of the retail malls and incorporate technology into the work that we are doing” concluded MEC Ramokgopa.
