AXA expands into Tanzania as demand for international healthcare grows

AXA Health International, which operates the AXA Global Healthcare brand, has announced a new collaboration in Tanzania with Alliance Insurance Corporation Limited and MIC Global Risks, furthering its global expansion and extending its presence across Africa.

The collaboration will strengthen access to premium international healthcare in Tanzania, enabling businesses, expatriates and internationally mobile professionals to benefit from AXA Global Healthcare’s Global Executive Health Plan (GEHP).

The announcement builds on AXA Health International’s collaboration with Executive Healthcare Solutions (EHS) in October 2025, which established an exclusive distribution framework across Kenya and multiple other African markets. In Tanzania, MIC Global Risks – appointed by EHS as intermediary – acts as the exclusive distributor in the market.

In Tanzania:

  • AXA Health International provides international healthcare administration, access to its global provider network and medical expertise.
  • MIC Global Risks acts as the exclusive distributor, supporting client engagement, policy issuance and servicing.
  • Alliance Insurance Corporation Limited is the licensed insurer, ensuring the collaboration operates within the local regulatory framework.

Tanzania is an increasingly important centre for investment, trade and professional mobility, attracting multinational companies, expatriates and internationally mobile professionals. As the economy becomes more integrated with regional and global markets, demand is growing for reliable access to healthcare beyond national borders – particularly for specialised treatment that may not be available locally.

GEHP is designed to meet this need, providing structured access to internationally recognised hospitals and specialist providers, supported by services such as medical evacuation and coordinated cross-border care.

GEHP is not intended to operate as a domestic health insurance scheme. It forms part of an international private medical insurance framework designed to facilitate access to specialised treatment beyond national borders when required. The arrangement operates within Tanzanian insurance regulations.

Karim Idilby, Chief Growth Officer, AXA Global Healthcare, said: “Tanzania represents an important milestone in AXA Health International’s global growth strategy, strengthening our footprint in key high-growth regions and demonstrating our long-term commitment to sustainable growth across Africa.

“As Tanzania’s role as a regional hub for investment, trade and professional mobility continues to expand, so too does demand for international healthcare protection.

“Through this collaboration, we are ideally positioned to combine AXA’s global healthcare expertise with Alliance’s trusted local experience, aligning regulatory compliance with best-in-class service, and deepening our partnership with EHS and MIC to reimagine international healthcare provision in Africa. This expansion puts us on a clear path to become the leading international private healthcare provider in the region.”

Rajiv Kumar, Chief Executive Officer, Alliance Insurance Corporation Limited, said: “As Tanzania’s economy continues to grow and international mobility increases, the need for reliable international healthcare protection has evolved. Through our collaboration with AXA Health International and MIC Global Risks, we are strengthening an established international healthcare framework that enables clients in Tanzania to access specialised treatment abroad when required.”

Aly Maherali, Chief Executive Officer, MIC Global Risks, said: “The Global Executive Health Plan provides individuals, corporates and professionals in Tanzania with a clear pathway to international healthcare protection.

“Our collaboration with Alliance Insurance and AXA Health International ensures clients benefit from both strong local insurance support and global healthcare expertise. For the last 25 years we have been at the forefront of International private medical insurance provision in Sub-Saharan Africa and this collaboration serves to strengthen our commitment to our clients in Tanzania and the rest of Africa.”
