If your insurance could talk, what would it say?

If your insurance could pull up a chair at your kitchen table tonight… What would it ask you? Would it quietly clear its throat and say, “Are we still on the same page?”

Wynand van Vuuren, client experience partner at King Price Insurance, answers the questions your insurance would ask if it had a voice:

Are you comprehensively covered… Or just hoping for the best?

Comprehensive car insurance covers accidental loss or damage to your car, third party liability if you accidentally damage someone else’s property, and emergency assist services for when you need help most.

“Many people only realise what they aren’t covered for when they need to claim,” says Van Vuuren. “This is why understanding your policy schedule is critical.”

The same applies to buildings, home contents, and portable possessions. Do you know exactly what’s covered and what isn’t? If your insurance could talk, it would tell you to read your schedule carefully, ask questions, and update your cover if necessary.

You’ve turned 25… Did you tell me?

Age milestones matter. Drivers under 25 often pay higher premiums because, statistically, they run a higher risk of being involved in an accident. “Your premium is based on your unique risks,” explains Van Vuuren. “When your risks change, your insurer needs to know.”

You don’t need to invite your insurer to your birthday party, but you do need to send them a ‘did you know’.

Be honest… Are you underinsured?

Underinsurance sounds complicated, but it’s actually very simple: If you insure your buildings, home contents, or portable possessions for less than their current replacement value, a valid claim will likely only be paid out proportionately.

Imagine you’ve renovated your kitchen or bought a high-end laptop, and didn’t update your insured values. If disaster strikes, your payout may not be enough to fully repair or replace what you’ve lost.

You’ve moved… Why am I still stuck at your old address?

Moved to a new suburb? Downsized? Upgraded? Your address affects your risk profile. Security features, parking arrangements, and area-specific risks all play a role in how your premium is calculated and, if you’re paying the wrong premium, any claim may be affected.

Who’s really driving your car these days?

“Accuracy here really matters,” says Van Vuuren. “If the details are wrong, it can complicate or reduce a claim payout.”

Naming the correct regular driver is critical: This is the person who drives your car most often. If your 18-year-old has started using your car daily, or your partner now drives it to work, you need to let your insurer know.

You got married… Congrats! But did you update your cover?

Marriage often means sharing assets, combining households, and additional cars. It may also mean changes to who drives what and where valuables are kept. If you’ve merged lives but haven’t updated your insurance, your cover may not reflect your new circumstances.

Do you have the right cover for your life right now?

Insurance isn’t a ‘set and forget’ exercise. It should keep up with your life changes.

Regular reviews help ensure that your car, buildings, home contents, and portable possessions cover keeps pace with your reality. Look for an insurer that makes updates easy through WhatsApp and a self-service portal, and that still offers a helpful call centre if you prefer speaking to a person.

Van Vuuren says that, if your insurance could talk, it wouldn’t necessarily try to sell you more. But it would question whether your cover still matches your life.
