While Finance Minister, Tito Mboweni, did acknowledge the urgency of improving South Africa’s electricity supply in his recent Medium Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS), crucial detail was lacking in terms of providing firm commitment to the process, and a clear framework of how it will run.

This is according to Tygue Theron, Head of Business Development at Energy Partners Intelligence – a division of Energy Partners and part of the PSG group of companies – who says he hoped to see a greater level of Government buy-in, along with a plan of action for the country’s necessary shift towards more sustainable, independently-produced energy.

“We appreciate that Minister Mboweni noted progress in the unbundling of Eskom and allowing municipalities to buy electricity from different sources, while highlighting plans to procure 12 000 MW of new electricity capacity from independent power producers (IPPs). However, the mid-term budget failed to provide the necessary level of detail around this progress and these plans.”
