Old Mutual Insure and FTFA Empower Communities with 1,000 Trees on Sustainability Day

In celebration of Sustainability Day, Old Mutual Insure, in partnership with Food & Trees for Africa (FTFA), has distributed 1,000 fruit and indigenous shade trees to households in Kanana Park, Johannesburg. This initiative forms part of a broader Corporate Social Investment (CSI) programme aimed at promoting environmental sustainability and community empowerment.

Since 2023, the partnership has planted over 2,000 trees across Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, the Free State, and the Eastern Cape. The latest distribution continues this momentum, with a 50/50 mix of fruit-bearing and indigenous trees selected to support food security, improve air quality, and enhance urban cooling.

The tree planting activities, held on 22 October 2025, saw enthusiastic participation from Old Mutual Insure employees across three provinces. These volunteer-driven efforts reflect the company’s commitment to making a tangible impact in the communities it serves.

“The collaborative spirit of the Old Mutual Insure team has been exceptional,” said Robyn Hills, Head of Programmes at FTFA. “Distributing 1,000 trees on Sustainability Day delivers real environmental and social value—benefits that communities can see, touch, and eat.”

“This initiative is about more than planting trees,” added Antonia Oakes, Executive for Customer Experience. “It’s about investing in the long-term well-being of communities and building a greener, more resilient South Africa.”

By the end of October, the partnership will have distributed more than 3,000 trees, demonstrating Old Mutual Insure’s dedication to climate action and sustainable development. The long-term effects of the project will be tracked to ensure lasting benefits for the communities involved.
