OMI Empowers Brokers and Provides Employment more than 50 Young Graduates

Old Mutual Insure

Old Mutual Insure (OMI) proudly announces the successful conclusion of its groundbreaking Graduate Broker Development Programme, a strategic initiative designed to fundamentally reshape South Africa’s insurance broker industry. This pioneering programme has not only empowered but also provided significant employment opportunities to 52 talented young broker academy graduates, with a strong emphasis on females, marking this a pivotal moment for diversity and inclusion within the insurance sector. The culmination of this impactful journey will be formally celebrated at an eagerly anticipated Gala Dinner, acknowledging the dedication and achievements of its inaugural cohort on the 8th of October 2025.

OMI is committed to actively fostering an inclusive and equitable environment by meticulously equipping these young professionals with the essential skills, comprehensive knowledge and unparalleled opportunities required to assume critical leadership and influential roles within the sector. This initiative is a testament to OMI's dedication to building a more representative and dynamic industry.

Over the past year, the inaugural cohort of 52 graduates embarked on and successfully completed an intensive and rigorous training curriculum. This comprehensive programme was designed to prepare them for the intricate complexities, dynamic challenges, and demanding requirements inherent in the modern insurance broking landscape.

A significant and commendable achievement of the programme is the remarkable rate at which many graduates have already transitioned into permanent broker roles across various segments at OMI. This demonstrates the immediate, tangible, and profound impact of the initiative on both their individual careers and the broader industry. Notably, more than 65% of the graduates are black women, powerfully underpinning OMI’s deep-seated dedication to driving inclusive growth, fostering gender equality, and strengthening the talent pipeline and succession planning within the industry.

"The Old Mutual Insure Graduate Broker Development Programme is far more than just a training initiative; it represents a powerful catalyst for profound and meaningful change within the South African insurance sector," so says, Soul Abrahams – Chief Executive Retail. Old Mutual Insure is not merely nurturing a new generation of skilled leaders; we are actively and deliberately transforming the demographic landscape of the industry, ensuring it accurately and authentically reflects the rich and diverse talent pool of our nation. The resounding success of this first cohort stands as a powerful testament to their unwavering dedication, exceptional resilience, and our collective, shared vision for a future that is not only more equitable but also vibrantly dynamic and inclusive."

Whilst we hosted a graduation yesterday, a second cohort of 20 graduates has commenced as of the 8th of September 2025, proving and showing how intentional and passionate OMI is in up-skilling and propelling as many young graduates as possible to be ready to enter the world of work. OMI’s programme is a strategic, forward-thinking investment in the future and sustainable growth of the insurance broking sector. It aims to cultivate a robust and diverse pipeline of highly skilled, competent, and innovative professionals poised to drive innovation, stimulate economic growth, and introduce fresh perspectives into the industry.

By placing a strong emphasis on transformation, continuous development, and strategic mentorship, OMI is unequivocally setting a new, elevated standard for corporate responsibility, industry transformation, and socio-economic impact. This initiative exemplifies OMI's commitment to creating lasting positive change and a more inclusive and dynamic future.
